Health Information Technician Working Conditions

Medical records and health information technicians held about 188,600 jobs in 2014. Most medical records and health information technicians worked in hospitals or physicians’ offices, so their physical working conditions are generally good. Technicians typically work at desks or in offices and may spend many hours in front of computer monitors. In 2014, hospitals and physician offices employed 38% and 21% of all health information technicians, respectively. Other key employers are nursing and residential care facilities and government institutions.

Most medical records and health information technicians work full time. In healthcare facilities that are open 24 hours a day, working conditions for health information technicians may include working evening or overnight shifts.
